GRAPE-SPH Chemodynamical Simulation of Elliptical Galaxies I: Evolution of Metallicity Gradients

We simulate the formation and chemodynamical evolution of 124 elliptical galaxies by using a GRAPE-SPH code that includes various physical processes associated with the formation of stellar systems: radiative cooling, star formation, feedback from Type II and Ia supernovae and stellar winds, and chemical enrichment. In our CDM-based scenario, galaxies form through the successive merging of sub-...

GRAPE-SPH Chemodynamical Simulation of Elliptical Galaxies II: Scaling Relations and the Fundamental Plane

We simulate the formation and chemodynamical evolution of 128 elliptical galaxies using a GRAPE-SPH code that includes various physical processes that are associated with the formation of stellar systems: radiative cooling, star formation, feedback from Type II and Ia supernovae and stellar winds, and chemical enrichment. We find that the star formation timescale controls when and where stars f...

Chemodynamical Simulations of Elliptical Galaxies

We review recent developments in the field of chemodynamical simulations of elliptical galaxies, highlighting (in an admittedly biased fashion) the work conducted with our cosmological N-body/SPH code GCD+. We have demonstrated previously the recovery of several primary integrated early-type system scaling relations (e.g. colourmagnitude relation, LX-TX-[Fe/H]X) when employing a phenomenologica...

A possible theoretical explanation of metallicity gradients in elliptical galaxies

Models of chemical evolution of elliptical galaxies taking into account different escape velocities at different galactocentric radii are presented. As a consequence of this, the chemical evolution develops differently in different galactic regions; in particular, we find that the galactic wind, powered by supernovae (of type II and I) starts, under suitable conditions, in the outer regions and...

Metallicity gradients as detectors of matter distribution in elliptical galaxies

In this work we discuss on the basis of the instantaneous recycling approximation the possibility of determining a relation between matter distribution (luminous and dark) in elliptical galaxies and the observed metallicity gradients. A particular case is developed in detail yielding an analitycal expression of the above relation.
